Why Choose AGRA

We are a farmer-centered, African-led institution that is working to transform smallholder farming from a solitary struggle to survive to a business that thrives.

Together with our partners including African governments, researchers, development partners, the private sector and civil society, we work to increase incomes and improve the food security of smallholder farmers – men and women who make up 70% of our population – who typically cultivate staple crops on two hectares or less.

We were established in 2006 following a call by the late Kofi Annan, former UN Secretary-General and our founding Chair who recognized that an African-based, African-led institution was needed to advance food security and inclusive rural development on the continent, with smallholder farmers at the center of Africa’s growing economy.

Through our 5-year strategy (2017-2019), we are working with our partners to support 11 priority African countries and 30 million smallholder farm households to increase their incomes and improve their food security.

Under this strategy, we will deliver through an approach that simultaneously catalyses change at farmer level, strengthens input and output market systems and puts government at the centre to enable and champion private-sector-led agricultural growth at national level.

Join us and be a part of Africa’s largest pool of agricultural experts to drive a uniquely African green revolution as the surest path to the continent’s inclusive economic growth and development.
